Reading: Mark 6:35-44 New International Version (NIV)
Welcome to today’s Tuesday edition. Today we focus on the key verse 38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.” . Remember the setting – Jesus, the disciples are stuck in a remote place with over 5,000 people and we are about to witness one of the most amazing miracles. There is a need far bigger than the resources available and we are picking key learning from here. So next point:
- You have to make an effort to find out what you have available – God starts with what you have in your hands as a seed
I find it very interesting that Jesus did not rise up from where He was seated, stretch out His hands towards heaven and call on bread to fall down for people to eat. So how He did it must have profound teachings for us. He asked the disciples – how many loaves do you have? You see God uses what you have to create a miracle in your life. The challenge we have is in establishing correctly what we have available to us. The challenge you are facing today – however big or small – the starting point for your miracle is in finding out what you have got available.
Remember the story of Elisha and the poor widow – 2 Kings 4:2 “Maybe there’s something I can do to help,” Elisha said. “What do you have in your house?” “Sir, I have nothing but a small bottle of olive oil.”
When God wanted to use Moses in Exodus 4:2-3 Then the Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?” “A staff,” he replied. 3 The Lord said, “Throw it on the ground.” Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it.
There are also times when we have completely nothing physical to show and in such circumstances, all we need is faith in God’s ability. The woman with the issue of blood in Luke 8:48 didn’t have anything except a believe that if she touched Jesus – she would get healed and Jesus speaks to her and says in verse 48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”
The blind beggar Bartimaeus in Mark 10:48 didn’t have anything as well except faith that Jesus of Nazareth could do something – so He provide a “big shout / scream” and for sure Jesus called Him out.
48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”…..
52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.
For you to experience and live a miraculous life style there is need to provide God with something that He can work with and the good thing is that there is no one who doesn’t have anything. If a blind man had something – you have too. If this woman who had been sick for so many years had something – you have too. Even for Moses, the fugitive in the desert came forward with a stick! Now this needs to be on an on-going basis – There is no farmer who plants a crop for one season and then goes to rest. Farmers keep planting every season and we have to keep doing the same for continued harvest. The problem we have in church is that people want to come and plant once and then sit around waiting and watching. No farmer plants a seed and the goes to stand around waiting for it to germinate. You trust that in God’s appointed time, it will sprout from the ground. This should be our approach to life. Keep planting and leave the germination and multiplication to God.
Every challenge or season in your life – good or bad is an opportunity for you to plant a seed or to provide God with something to work with. I would like us to spend more time on this tomorrow – how do you check what you have available?.
